Performance testing in a national marketing action

Description

To celebrate its founding anniversary, one of the largest tourism companies in Brazil has prepared a large multi-channel marketing campaign, including a high-rated TV show. The goal was to attract a massive number of customers to their website and physical stores, but the company needed to ensure that its systems were ready to support unexpected and simultaneous traffic. It was in this scenario that our team took action, implementing performance tests to ensure that the online platform not only supports the peak of hits, but also offers an agile and uninterrupted shopping experience.

The main challenge was to raise the system's capacity in a short time. The normal volume of traffic would need to be multiplied by up to 50 times, resulting in an exponential growth of simultaneous users. In addition, this maximum capacity would need to be maintained for a long period, without the performance being compromised. Our specific challenges included: 

  • Scalability: Increase support from 100 to 3,500 transactions per minute (TPM). 
  • Monitoring and Stability: Keep applications running without loss of performance, even under heavy traffic. 
  • Real-time diagnostics: Enable real-time assessments and detailed diagnostics to quickly identify and correct bottlenecks. 
  • Continuous follow-up: Support the development team during platform evolution, updates and new test rounds. 

Our team worked closely with the client in a process of continuous improvement, using a series of Performance testing waves. Each wave involved evaluation, application of improvements and a rigorous follow-up to ensure that the processes were aligned with the company's business objectives. 

More than a simple one-off solution, our work sought to establish a new level of performance. At each test cycle, the systems were evaluated and optimized, ensuring that they were ready for the big day of the campaign. Collaboration with the development team was key to identifying and solving architectural problems and data availability, transforming marketing action into a catalyst for the company's technological evolution. 

The campaign was a success. During the day of the promotion and the following week, the company's platform remained fully functional, supporting more than 5,000 concurrent users. All essential processes, consultation, quotation and sale, operated without failures, providing a fluid shopping experience for all customers. 

Most notable is that the system's capacity has been improved by more than 500 times in relation to its initial state. This not only guaranteed the success of the 50% off promotion broadcast on TV, but also increased the daily performance of e-commerce. The customer realized the importance of constant and integrated performance monitoring, and the gains in efficiency and stability have become an essential part of their operation. The result was a robust system prepared for future demands. 

Details and Conclusion

This marketing action proved to be more than an isolated event, as it boosted the evolution in different points of the company's architecture. In addition to ensuring stability for the campaign, the performance testing process showed the need for improvements in the data architecture, development flow and overall availability of the application.
